Literal meaning of Dua’a (Prayer)

The word dua’a (Prayer) is Arabic word which means to call upon someone. There are various other terms used for prayers which are munājah, nidā, etc. It is therefore a spiritual connection between a master and His Servant for the later’s forgiveness and neediness.  It is a natural phenomenon that whenever a person is in trouble, the first thing he does is to kneel before ALLAH for seeking help and guidance. He knows that the only entity who can get him out of trouble is the Almighty and no one else.

Meaning of Munajah

Munājah refers to a hidden talk between ALLAH and His creation which is usually used for seeking help from ALLAH.  Pointing to this type of prayer, ALLAH says in the Holy Qur’ān:

‘’Say: Who delivered you from the darkness of the land and the sea? Ye call upon Him humbly and in secret, (saying): If we are delivered from this (fear) we truly will be of the thankful.’’

Meaning of Nida

Nidā refers “to calling upon the Creator while withdrawn from humans.” The Holy Qur’ān narrates the story of the prophet Zachariah in this regard who made a sincere supplication to ALLAH in his old age to bestow him with a son, a successor so that he could transfer his divine knowledge and duties to him.

‘’A mention of the mercy of thy Lord unto His servant Zachariah. When he cried unto his Lord a cry in secret, Saying: My Lord!… give me from Thy Presence a successor who shall inherit of me and inherit (also) of the house of Jacob… (It was said unto him): O Zachariah! Lo! We bring thee tidings of a son whose name is John; We have given the same name to none before (him).’’

Rationale behind the unacceptance of prayers

ALLAH Subhanahu Watallah has said in the glorious Quran that He is the most nearest when the caller calls Him. He listens to them and answers every such call. It is ALLAH’s greatest reply to those who say that their prayers go unanswered. In fact, their prayers never go unanswered but there is always a right time for their acceptance. In fact, Allah is all knowing and knows what is better for His creation. A man is always in a hurry and he wants the same in terms of prayers but ALLAH’s plans are always better for His servants.
