The Significance of Zakat

A man has to pass through many test before he can be considered a true Muslim. In the first place he should practically demonstrate his belief in the formula of faith by abstaining from obeying the behests of other authorities besides God’s and refusing to surrender himself to his base desires or following the traditions and superstition of his fore fathers un-Islamic customs and practices and entirely submitting himself to the commandments of God and following in the footsteps of the prophet in the conduct of his life. In the second place his spirit of obedience is tested through prayer and fasting. When the call to prayer is given he has to hasten to perform his duty to God by abandoning his business or his recreations and even his sleep in the early hours of the morning.

When Ramadan appears, he has to abstain from food and drink and suspended even all the legitimate comforts of the body for a prescribed period of time. Those who submit themselves to these injunctions faithfully are those who pass their tests successfully. Now the third test lies in the sacrifice of property. Those who come out successful in the first two tests are not fit to be considered the faithful servants of God unless they pass through the third test.

It is also be seen how far they are ready to part which their wealth for one may offer his life for a good cause, but to sacrifice his wealth for the good of others becomes a hard job for him. But Islam (Submission of God’s Will) demands, if required, the sacrifice of life, property, children, family, home and country, in fact everything that man holds dear to gain the pleasure of God, for it is said:

“By no means shall you attain to righteousness until you spend (in the way of Allah almighty) out of that which your cherish most”.
