Fasting in Islam

The first thing that could be easily discerned from looking at the institution of fasting is that Islam wants to strengthen the idea of God’s sovereignty in the consciousness of man and in its outward expression to such an extent that man submits his will and independence to the will of God. In all he feels and does. No one will impose upon himself the strict observance of the restrictions of fasting unless he accepts the authority of God over himself and gives up his right of acting as he pleased.

During day time for a continuous period of ten of fourteen hours he abstains from eating and drinking and connubial companionship. When the minutes of early dawn end the night he withholds all the demands of his carnal existence and when the hour of sun-set arrives he breaks his fast, as if not his will to the will of God.

No temptation is greater than the temptation of satisfying one’s thirst and hunger when drink and food are in one’s possession; yet the temptation is overcome not once or twice as if it were by chance, but day after day regularly for a whole month with a set purpose of drawing closer and closer to the Divine Being. A man can avail himself of the best diet, yet he prefers to remain hungry; he has the cool drink by his side, yet he prefers to parch with thirst; he touches neither food nor drink simply because he thinks it is the commandment of God that he should not do so. In the inner recesses of his house, there is no one to see him yet there has developed in him the sense of the nearness of God and extent that he would not put a drop of it on his tongue.
