As human beings, it is in our nature to inquire the benefits of the things that we adopt in our life. It may, however, be considered selfish to think like this about prayer. But we always want to know the benefits and positive aspects of things before applying them on ourselves. So, naturally, we think about prayer that will it be any good for us or not. We also ask questions about the creator, that will he listen to us or answer us when we call him through prayer?

Prayers (salah) signify a set of custom body movements and words said by the person offering the prayer, and at fixed times in the day and night. Allah says in Qur’an, “Verily, the prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours”. (Quran 4:103)

Benefits of Prayers:

The Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him and his progeny) said: “The first thing that Allah made obligatory upon my Ummah was the five prayers; the first thing from their acts of worship that shall be taken up will be the five prayers; the first thing that they will be questioned about will be the five prayers.” (Kanzul `Ummal, Volume 7, Tradition 18859)

The Pillar of Religion:

Imam Al-Baqir (Peace Be Upon Him) has said:

“Islam has been founded and established on five things: Prayers, Zakat, Hajj, Sawm (Fasting) and Wilayah.”

(Biharul Anwar, Volume 82, Page 234)

Hazrat Abdullah Bin Mas’ud (R.A) Narrated:

I asked the Messenger of Allah (S.W.T) “Which practice is most preferred by Allah (S.W.T)?”.

The Messenger of Allah (S.W.T) replied “Offering Prayer within the prescribed time”.

I asked again “what is the next most preferred practice by Allah (S.W.T)?”

The Messenger of Allah (S.W.T) replied “to do good deeds to and for your parents”.

I asked again “what is the next most preferred practice by Allah (S.W.T)?”

The Messenger of Allah (S.W.T) replied  “To struggle in the way of Allah (S.W.T)”.

(Bukhari and Muslim)

Hazrat Abu Umaamah (R.A) Narrated:

“The Messenger of Allah (S.W.T) said”: When a person stands up for prayer the doors of the Heavens will be opened for him and all the obstructions between Allah (S.W.T) and him will be removed and the hoors (women of paradise) will be there to welcome him. However this will only last until the person praying begins to unnecessarily clear the nose and throat.”

Allah (S.W.T) has said in the Noble Quran:

“I have not created the jinn and humankind for any other purpose except that they should worship Me.”

(Noble Quran 51:56)
It is clear from the verse of Noble Quran that the purpose of our birth and of our life is no other than that of the worship of Allah (S.W.T).
